From Lived Experience

Janica Van Alstine
Founder & Designer of the Ontario T1D Hub
Hello, I'm Janica Van Alstine. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 16 months old. Growing up with T1D meant navigating school, activities and daily life while constantly managing a complex condition. I watched my family learn alongside me - attending diabetes clinics, events and camps, and connecting with other families also learning to navigate this lifelong diagnosis.
Over time, I became increasingly aware of the gaps that exist for individuals and families living with type 1 diabetes. Despite the dedication of many organizations and healthcare teams, resources and support were often scattered and difficult to find. Families are frequently left to piece information together on their own while adjusting to life with a new diagnosis.
Built from lived experience. Guided by community.
When my younger sister was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, our family experienced this reality again from a new perspective. I also began to notice how limited awareness and understanding of T1D existed within school communities and the broader public. Throughout high school, I worked to raise awareness and advocate for greater understanding and support for students living with T1D, including initiating awareness efforts within my school community.
These experiences highlighted the need for a centralized, accessible space where individuals and families across Ontario could easily find trusted information, community supports, and opportunities for connection.
The Ontario T1D Hub was created to bring these resources together - to simplify access, strengthen community connections, and help ensure that no one navigating type 1 diabetes feels alone or unsupported.
As I continue my studies in healthcare and health policy, this hub will remain a growing, community-driven initiative shaped by the needs and experiences of those it serves.
